Billot lists hundreds of writing grants, contests, prizes, and such, from the Senior Poet Laureate Competition's $50 prize (plus publication and chapbook) for a U.S. poet over the age of 50 to the $250,000 awards in Health Policy Research. In addition to the more commonplace categories, there is money to be had for writing about cats ($500) and dogs (two awards, one for $500, the other for $2,450), biblical position papers on current world issues ($10,000), and stories about bowling ($3,800). My school's library is having a Christmas creative writing contest, and I've written two things for it: a poem, and a short story. These contests get some entries, but not a lot, and are especially lacking in the poetry section. I think my short story is pretty strong, but my poem isn't my best, and I'm not too proud of it. However, it's good enough that if I enter, I'm very likely to get a prize. So, should I go ahead and enter it although it doesn't showcase my talent, or should I hold it aside since I already have the short story? (more...)

i am in band and i have to practice my clairinet each day and this week we are having a creative practice slip contest. everyone has to turn in a practice slip to the band teacher but it has to be unique!! I need some help on how to creatively give my boyfriend his Christmas present. We've been together for a little over four months, and are both 21...he's almost 22. Anyways, he likes going to the casino and likes Dierks Bentley (he wrote into a contest Bentley was holding, and won, so my bf's name is published in his album cover) so I got him tickets to his concert at a casino.... I need a creative way to give it to him though, I want to make something cute....but I can't quite come up with anything good enough. How can I give it to him creatively...so he knows I put all of this into consideration? Thanks a lot! :) (more...)
