Open Question: AHHH! Which Class Should I Take!?
What do colleges think of Creative Writing? Is it just another slack class or is it a course that requires an adequate amount of work? I want to go to Duke or UGA. What about Web Page Design or Computer Applications? I'm not too interested in any of these classes (they'll be considered as my elective) and I do not plan of majoring in any of these fields. I just want to know from a college's perspective, which class trumps the rest. Thanks :) (more...)

Open Question: What can u do with a fine art degree? ?
I do not want to be a art teacher. I love writing, dance and drama, everything creative. I'm soo confused. Cos I feel like I've rejected all my other interests for art, and thats not just what I want to do. Everyone in my art course seems to live for art but I live for every creative field. (more...)

Open Question: What's a good creative writing / Shakespearean / drama essay for college?
I'm in this A+ program at college, and one of the requirements is that I write a 5000 word essay on a subject of my choice, but the essay has to be on the subject that you wish to apply for in University. I'd like to move onto a Creative Writing course combined with Drama, and the only thought I had on that so far was Shakespeare. Any and all ideas welcome. :) xox P.S. I'd rather not do one based on Shakespeare's meaning today compared with his time: it seems too much of a historical language based thing. And it can't be so terribly simple that you'd find it in a SAT / GCSE paper, because it's meant to be similar to a University dissertation. (more...)

Resolved Question: Should I Just drop classes, I can't handle the pressure anymore?
I am a senior in high school and have a very strong gpa and 2100 SAT Score. I took all difficult classes throughout the years and have done a lot of extra curriculars. I am also an idiot. I took seven ap classes this year: English Language, Euro, Gov, Calc, Spanish, Psychology, and Physics. Originally, I had wanted to take Psych, English, Gov, Clac, and then some electives that I truly enjoyed like mythology or creative writing. Instead, I screwed myself over with a rediculous course load that i cant handle at all. I am failing every class but English and Math, and have already dropped Spanish because I failed out. Physics is my worst and I want to drop it more than anything in the world, but what college will really take me after dropping two classes. I applied to UF, Duke, and UVA, and surely those top tier schools won't want me for dropping, right? Please help. I am going crazy. (more...)

Open Question: can someone peer edit this for me?
A Letter to the Author Dear Gabrielle Zevin, After reading your book Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac this winter break I have decided to write you a letter on my disappointment. Of course I realize the word ?teenage? is used even in the title itself, but somehow I expected much better writing. The plot was fairly original, but it was not brought to its full potential with the lack of detail and logical support. In my lineup of recently read books, it would be near the bottom. The story is about a junior named Naomi who falls down a flight of stairs and gets a certain kind of amnesia where she ?[can?t] remember most things after sixth grade? (Zevin, 36). This lets her forget her hard past with her parents divorce and how it led her to her similarly troubled best friend Will, got her obsessed with the yearbook committee, and made her the person she is. This, at first, intrigued me, because it was about how someone would react if they were in a situation where they forgot how they normally felt about things, and changed with this new perspective. They can make different judgments and decisions with their minds unclouded by emotions. At one point Naomi wonders to herself ?if the former Naomi Porter had been, in all likelihood, a complete and total jerk, someone that [she] probably wouldn?t have even wanted to know.? (Zevin, 45). Losing her memory affects how she acts and thinks, and I thought this an interesting aspect to explore. However, that was about as creative as it got. It was a cliché story about a prep school girl who likes a boy who eventually dumps her. It was a whiny teenaged ?drama? that lacked any depth. I recently read the Twilight series, and its depth wasn?t the only thing that made it so worthwhile. Besides its exciting plot, it was also incredibly detailed. It explained every motive for every character?s actions and reactions by telling all the thoughts of the characters. In Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac there was merely dialog to attempt explaining things, and no thoughts were analyzed. The reader was just supposed to assume what made the character act they way they did was because of something that normally happens. It was simply uncreative. So because of the lack of information that would be explained through thought process, and lack of creativity Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac was simply a book unworthy of being read. My advice to you, Gabrielle Zevin, is to find a different profession. Besides being bad at your job, writing doesn?t seem right for you. Writers are creative people. Their writing is their art, and it is important to them. The book lacked passion and effort. Writing is about expressing yourself through words that affect other people. Your words are simply a copied version of another illegitimate story that has been used too many times and it never gets any better. it isnt a legitimate letter, it wont be sent to the actual author, its for school. its just the assignment.
