English Punctuation 1
English Punctuation 1 The rules of punctuation may not seem enjoyable or entertaining, but the Standard Deviants can at least help out in making the rules memorable with a cast of enthusiastic young performers who specialize in lighthearted but academically sound treatments of serious subjects. In The Untamed Worlds of English Punctuation, the troupe dons costumes (such as the uniform of a traffic cop) and hams it up while presenting lessons that begin by answering the basic question "What is punctuation?" The major "end marks" are then covered in a series of lessons that focus on the rules for employing periods, questions marks, and exclamation points. The uses of commas, semicolons, and colons are covered in a similarly lively manner, with useful tips, such as the "Furthermore Rule" to test the suitability of a semicolon. Following each set of lessons is a quiz which the student can take or skip, and the "Exclamation Exam," a comprehensive test covering all the material on the DVD, can be taken at the finish. There's only so much that can be done to make punctuation exciting, but the Standard Deviants do offer a multitude of offbeat examples. And fear not, the material included has all been approved by a serious academic panel. --Robert J. McNamara

Open Question: Help with flash fiction ideas?
Just to be clear, I don't want anyone to write this for me. Directions: Imagine a character who suddenly gets something he/she thought he/she wanted. Build a flash fiction piece that examines the complications that may result when dreams come true. Any ideas, especially on the thing the character gets? You can put down complications too if you want but I mostly want ideas on something (doesn't have to be materialistic) the character gets. I know I won't get too many responses but thanks in advance to those who do respond. God bless! I talked to my teacher & she said becoming immortal or famous. The only complications I can think of for those are really over used. Any original, or at least less common, ideas for complications for those? (more...)

Open Question: can some one help me (Esmeralda Santiago)?
In this excerpt from Esmeralda Santiago?s autobiography, When I Was Puerto Rican, a young girl makes an important discovery. Every day after school I went to the library and took out as many children?s books as I was allowed. I figured that if American children learned English through books, so could I, even if I was starting later. By my fourth month in Brooklyn, I could read and write English much better than I could speak it, and at midterms I stunned the teachers by scoring high in English, History, and Social Studies. During the January assembly, Mr. Grant announced the names of kids who had received high marks in each class. My name was called out three times. I became a different person to the other eighth graders. I was still in 8-23, but they knew, and I knew, that I didn?t belong there. 1. Which of the following lines describes a moment of discovery? Every day after school I went to the library and took out as many children?s books as I was allowed I was still in 8-23, but they knew, and I knew, that I didn?t belong there. I could read and write English 2. The author says that after her name was called three times, she became a different person to the other eighth graders. Why do you think this is so? They were jealous of her high grades. Until her name was announced, they hadn?t realized how well she read and wrote English. She made a point of letting everyone know how high her scores were. She wanted to be associated only with other students who got high marks. 3. What can you learn about the author from this selection? She prefers reading fiction to nonfiction. The work at her school in Brooklyn was easier than the work at her old school. She wanted to learn English. She had a difficult time in her physical education classes. (more...)
