The Singing Detective
The Singing Detective The late Dennis Potter was a master at mining the popular songs of the 1930s and '40s for dramatic effect, but he never did it better than in this British miniseries starring the inestimable Michael Gambon. Gambon plays a mystery writer named Philip E. Marlow, who is suffering a torturous bout of psoriatic arthritis in a British hospital, where he is a victim of both his disease and the national health plan. Unable to move without pain, he escapes into his imagination, plotting out a murder tale in which he is both a big-band singer and a private eye. But Potter and director Jon Amiel also mix in flashbacks of Marlow's youth and his unhappy marriage to explain how the real Marlow reached this sorry pass. Flawlessly, intricately, kaleidoscopically assembled, the six one-hour episodes of this British miniseries fly by like some fantastic fever dream. --Marshall Fine

Open Question: college essay help please?
im applying for college and its required that i write an essay on my career goals. i am finding it very difficult to write it because i tend to stray away from the subject, resulting in myself going over 500 words. here is what i have so far: My mind has always been set on pursuing a career within the medical field, but in the fifth grade when I traveled overseas to Cameroon, I finally came to the conclusion that I wanted to become a pharmacist. During my trip, I was able to be my own source in which I first handily saw several health hazards, which include doctors prescribing expired drugs shipped from Europe to patients and the alternative medicine being carried out by the native doctors, otherwise known as ?Juju doctors.? In addition to the health hazards, I observed the desperate need for better resources and technology and in order to improve the heath standards for a nation that my father calls home and ranks 36th in the world?s highest death rates, I was inspired to pursue a career in pharmacy so that I could advise the sick as well as physicians and other health practitioners on the correct selection and dosage of medications. people that have read past drafts have told me to elaborate more on my trip and others have told me not to do so. can someone please help me develop a structure that i can follow in order to stay on point? Open Question: The truth about the middle east war?
Was there a truce in the middle east????? During this six-month truce, the International Middle East Media Center (a collaboration of international and Palestinian journalists) reported that the Israeli army killed 23 Palestinians, wounded 62, and kidnapped 38 residents in the Gaza Strip. 'In terms of the daily life for Palestinians in Gaza, Israel has been blocking medical supplies, food, and fuel on a regular basis for the past two years. Prior to the latest attacks, many have died from treatable illnesses due to the blocking of medical supplies' 'Sadly, our media has not covered these tactics. Instead, it has generally chosen to publicize the Israeli spin of victimhood.' Read it for yourselves - its written by the US http://usa.mediamonitors.net/content/view/full/58127 (more...)
